What is the Haskell Extension?
Borrowing from Haskell Indian Nations University’s vision to become a national center for Indian education, research, and cultural programs, Haskell’s Youth Extension Program’s goal is to encourage the existence of positive activities for American Indian youth in surrounding Native communities. Our program is structured to give Indian youth the opportunity to improve their academic, social, and leadership skills, through participation in projects and activities both in their home communities and the communities of their counterparts.
How will Indian Youth benefit from this program?
By focusing on youth development, Haskell Extension encourages the Indian youth in the state of Kansas to build strength not only among their peers but also in their community, Haskell Extension will help them develop their self-esteem, while keeping their self-respect and dignity intact.
Extension Activities
HINU Extension’s goal is to support and host programs in the eight communities to give native youth a chance to improve their academic and social skills. This includes tutoring and mentoring programs. Technology workshops will help develop and improve existing computer skills.
HINU Extension will also promote leadership-building skills by hosting several events throughout the year. Expedition, will give the youth a chance to be ambassadors for their tribe and community as they travel across the region exploring different cultures and events. Highlights during and after the trip will be accessible through the extension website. This gives the communities a chance to be a part of the project along with their youth. These and other activities will interact with other Native youth from across the region.
How is Haskell Extension Funded?
Haskell Extension Program is made possible by a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Cooperative State Research Education Extension Service (CSREES), Kansas State University (KSU), and Haskell Indian Nations University.
