Music Program

About

The Music program offers a variety of courses in music theory, performance, history, and technology. Music courses provide a foundation that allows students to explore different areas of music. In addition to courses that fulfill the General Education requirement for Humanities and Arts, students may take courses as elective credit.

The music facilities are located in Tam-I-Nend Hall and the Auditorium (Band Room). Tam-I-Nend Hall features a 25-seat classroom with a Yamaha grand piano and an 8-seat digital piano lab with an iMac digital audio workstation.

The Haskell Band Room (located in the Haskell Auditorium) contains a musical score library, traditional band instruments, amps, and a 1915 Mason and Hamlin concert grand piano. In addition to its function as a classroom for the Haskell Band, the Haskell Band Room also provides a rehearsal/recording space for music students and student music ensembles.

The following courses are recommended for students interested in music: Fundamentals of Music, Music Appreciation (Through Classical Period), Music Appreciation (Through Contemporary Times), Music Theory, Keyboard Skills, Logic Pro, Haskell Band and Haskell Chorus.

The purpose of the music program is to contribute to the general education of all Haskell students, to foster the critical and creative thinking and problem solving skills necessary to the concept of a Bachelor of Arts degree, to initiate the education of Native American and Alaskan Native music professionals and educators, and to provide music experiences to Native and non-native communities.
