Eric Brock |
|
Head Coach –
5th Year |
With the
hiring of Eric Brock as head football coach on April 22, 2002
Haskell Indian Nations University gave Coach Brock a chance to
return to Lawrence, Kansas for the 1st time in 9 years.
Coach Brock a Laguna and Santa Clara Pueblo Indian started his
collegiate career here at Haskell playing wide receiver for Coach
Gary Tanner at the Junior College level. Brock then
transferred to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado to continue
playing and to begin his coaching career.
While
attending Fort Lewis College and finding himself with one year of
schooling to finish after his football eligibility was finalized
Eric Brock was asked to join the Fort Lewis Football Staff.
Brock said “I had always shown an interest in not just the X’s and
O’s on the field but why each scheme was used in certain situations.
I guess the coaches could see that I was interested in their
business.” In 1995 Coach Brock was given the duties as the
Running Backs Coach at Fort Lewis College and took on this endeavor
for two years.
In 1997
Coach Brock was fortunate enough to be offered the graduate
assistant position at the University of New Mexico in Brock’s home
town of Albuquerque, N.M. In this position Coach Brock worked
under former UNM Head Coach Dennis Franchione and current Head Coach
Rocky Long. “I have always been fortunate to be coached by and
coach with men that are not only good at their jobs but quality
human beings,” Brock said, “Their work ethic and integrity are
qualities that I strive for on a daily basis.” Coach Brock
held this position for three years working with the linebackers,
defensive line and the secondary. While at the University of
New Mexico Coach Brock earned his Master’s Degree and met his wife
formally Regina Jojola of Isleta, N.M.
Coach
Brock’s next opportunity took him to Thatcher, AZ where he was the
Defensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coordinator for Eastern
Arizona College. “Eastern Arizona opened my eyes to the highly
competitive junior college scene, with unbelievable athletes that
were at these schools.” After one season in Thatcher, AZ Coach
Brock was offered the Defensive Coordinator and Special Teams
Coordinator position back at his alma mater Fort Lewis College.
“I think that Durango, Colorado is one of the prettiest places in
America and I was happy to have chance to return”, Brock said.
However, Coach Brock’s return to Durango only lasted one year
because another alma mater dear to his heart came calling.
“Just
after spring break I received a call that Haskell Indian Nations
University had requested that I come down for an interview,” Brock
said, “and I could not think of a better environment in which to
work and raise my family around.” Coach Brock is currently
working toward a conference championship and developing our student
athletes for success on and off the field.
Brock
resides here in Lawrence with his wife Regina and their 4 year old
daughter Elizabeth (Pa-whim-pa Shoodi).
