2008-2009 Basketball Season- A New Look at Haskell Basketball
Coach Ted Juneau, Head Basketball coach of Haskell Indian Nations University today released the names of incoming freshman and transfer students competing for roster spots for the 2008-09 season. This group is very talented and will add depth and competition for playing time. Some have the ability to step in and impact our varsity team and other will gain experience on our J.V. team. This may be the most talented group of recruits Haskell has assembled since they became a NAIA school. All our freshman recruits will have an impact on our program during the next four years.
Headlining the transfer students in the recruiting class are two NCAA Division I players.
Salomon Horse Chief 62 Guard (University of Pacific) Sequoyah, OK
Eugene (Lenny) Miles 61 Guard (University of New Mexico) Denver, CO
Daniel Brown 66 Wing (Indian Hills CC) Madison, WI
Jimmy Wilkett 68 Center (Stigler HS) Stigler, OK
Jon Hawk 66 Center (John Mullen HS) Denver, CO
The incoming freshman class includes the following players:
D.J. Fish 65 Wing Browning, Montana
The 6-foot-5 Fish led Browning to the state Class A championship and was named the state tournament MVP. He had 25 points, eight rebounds and nine steals in his team's 72-52 win over Butte Central for the state title. Among Fish's accomplishments are his being Browning's number-one runner in cross country for 2007-08, as well as having been named All-State and Academic All-State. Fish took All-State in basketball from 2006-08 at point guard, center and forward; he was Super-State those years as well in basketball; he was All-Conference in basketball from 2005-08, and he made Class A MVP for the 2007-08 season
Dominic Tiger Cortes 63 Guard Glendora, California
Dominic was the San Gabriel Valley (California) Tribune Player of the Year. Dominic was the Sierra League and CIF-Southern Division 1-A first-team selection. Cortes averaged 25 points his senior year. He finished with 1,667 career points, ranking him fourth on the tradition rich Glendora High School all-time list..
Ky Defilippo 6 Guard, Killeen HS Killeen, Texas
Ky was a three year starter at Killeen High School, a 5A school in Texas. He was All-District his senior year.
Byron Grant 60 Guard, Whitehorse HS Whitehorse, Utah
Trevor Martin 63 Wing Whitehorse HS Whitehorse, Utah
Both Byron and Trevor were All-State in class 1-A in Utah.
Clint Not Afraid 62 Wing Hardin, HS Hardin, Montana
Played for Team Montana that placed second at NABI 2008.
Tyler Cooper 63 Wing Christian Heritage HS Riverdale, Utah
All Conference averaged 16pts. and 8.2 rebounds per game. Received all District and All State honors.
Trey Osborne 61 Guard Dewey HS Dewey, OK
Haskell Indian Nations University returns 11 players from 2007-08 squad.
Ben Carrywater 64 Wing
Ben has been all-MCAC the past two seasons and All-American honors are possible this season. Ben average a double figures in scoring and rebounding last season and started 26 of 26 games last season.
Terrance Little Thunder (Nations) 610 Post
Terrance was player of the week in MCAC play last year. He should be a dominate force for the Indians this season. He has worked hard during the off-season to improve his game. Nations started 25 of 26 games last season. Terrance should contend for post season honors.
Vince Chavez 60 Guard
Vince quietly developed into one of the best shooters on last seasons team. Because of his defensive abilities, he guarded the best offensive opponent. Vince started 21 of 26 games last year.
Ron Cunningham 511 Guard
Ron ranks as one of the hardest working players on the squad. He started 17 games last year. Ron was a high school teammate of KU great Mario Chalmers.
Dominic Clichee 511 Guard
Dominics quickness and shooting abilities were evident last season. Dominic started 12 games and averaged 17 minutes per game last year. Dominic will be an academic All-American nominee with a 4.0 grade point average.
Kevin Begaye 61 Wing
Kevin started four games last year and averaged 11.5 minutes per game. His outside shooting ability makes him a scoring threat when ever he touches the ball.
Jeff Berridge 6 Wing
Jeff started two games last year and added depth to the squad. He demonstrates a great work ethic and players bigger than his size.
Daelan High Wolf 6 Guard
Daelan averaged13 minutes a game last year. He suffered an ankle injury that caused him to miss almost half the conference season. He is a great shooter and intense player. A well respected player by his teammates for his work habits and attitude.
