In the spring of 1993, Haskell received approval to offer a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association. The elementary teacher education program received full accreditation from the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE) August 1998. Students who graduate from Haskell with a baccalaureate degree are certified to teach and the program is designed to meet the KSBE (NCATE) standards for accreditation.

Haskell School of Education provides course work in paraprofessional education for students who strive to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. Students who complete their bachelor’s degree will be able to apply for certification in the state of Kansas to teach grades kindergarten through grade six. Candidates wishing to teach in other states should inquire with respective state certification units.

The preparation of highly qualified American Indian and Alaska Native teachers at Haskell Indian Nations University will make a significant difference in the educational experiences of this nation’s American Indian and Alaska Native elementary and secondary students.

In other words, the program strives to prepare healthy individuals in terms of their spiritual, emotional, physical and intellectual capacities who are self-directed learners.

Haskell’s Elementary Teacher Education Program graduates American Indian and Alaska native teachers or scholars who are familiar with state-of-the-art research on teaching and learning, and can incorporate traditional/cultural methods in order to advanced the creation of AI/AN pedagogy. This new paradigm of thought is necessary to ameliorate the conditions of schooling that are not promoting successful education of Native students.

Basis for Conceptual Framework

Haskell Indian University-School of Education, Elementary Teacher Education Program is a nationally recognized program that prepares AI/AN K-6 Teachers to teach all children from their cultural perspective while integrating the philosophies of the American Educational system.
