Tae Kwon Do-Smith
MW 3:30-5:00 pm Cardio Room-Coffin Complex

Smith’s Tae Kwon Do is dedicated to providing quality instruction and service to students of all ages. Smith teaches to provide students with tremendous physical and mental benefits. Smith offers safe, supervised, well instructed classes to adults and young student.   Smith is dedicated to his students and promises to:

  • Acquaint the student with the philosophy of the Tae Kwon Do practitioner.
  • To acquaint the student with the beginning technique of Tae Kwon Do.
  • Prepare students for the physical rigors of unarmed self-defense.
  • Prepare students for competition at the local and state level.

Flute Class- Von Villareal
T 6:30-7:30 pm 110 Parker Hall

Von Villareal, local flute artist, will hold a unique flute-making workshop. This class provides each participant with a chance to create an authentic, Native American-style flute. This style of flute is easy to play, and very satisfying to make. The sound that resonates from these traditional, handcrafted instruments is beautiful. This workshop will include creating, decorating, and learning to play the flutes.  Your flute will be made from cedar blocks. Each flute will be decorated with your unique design. Students will construct these flutes from a piece of wood to completion.

Appliqué Beadwork- Dave Madden
101 Minoka Hall

Our programs’ focus is on skills and skills development, rather than on completing projects. While every course uses a project in which to provide a context for applying skills, the outcome we are seeking is the learning of skills, not merely completing a project.  Students will be taught the appliqué, or flat stitch, style of beadwork.  This style is used in the construction of traditional and powwow clothes and adornments by many tribes across the United States.

Hard sole Moccasin Class - Dave Madden/ Brandon Bandy

Creating moccasins is a beautiful traditional art form. Today people can enjoy various designs of moccasins, or choose to bring this traditional craft alive by creating their own.  This course is designed for those students who have little or no experience with beading or working with buckskin/leather. Learn the traditional methods of making a pair of plains hard sole moccasins. Students will apply beads to complete their project.  Materials Fee.

Inter Tribal Dance Class-TBA
1st & 3rd TH 7-8p Minoka Hall

Dancing serves many purposes for Native Americans, honoring those who go to war, others who get married, and celebration of life events. Native American social dances were used a venue in social settings as form of introduction between young couples or friends and families.  Some dances tell stories and others are pure recreation. Dancing is an art form with many steps that exhibit your personality. Pow wow dancers are masters in their art form.  Students will be exposed to inter-tribal dance styles found at powwows across North America.  Students are taught the basic dance steps, where the dances originated, and how they have evolved into the contemporary powwow styles we see today.
