Our Mission

The mission of TRiO Student Support Services at Haskell Indian Nations University is to provide eligible student participants with academic strategies and resources that will lead to good academic standing, retention, and graduation.

What is SSS?

Student Support Services (SSS) is one of the five federally funded TRiO programs at Haskell Indian Nations University under the Department of Educational Opportunity Programs. SSS grant is funded through the Department of Education to provide comprehensive services to help students achieve a successful college experience by increasing academic performance, retention, and graduation rates. SSS also works to foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of low income, first generation students, and students with disabilities. The strength of the SSS program is providing comprehensive support to under-represented students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds and have the ability and desire to succeed but would benefit from additional advocacy, academic, personal, financial, and career support. SSS is a resource that provides personalized and comprehensive support services for eligible participants to help them achieve their full potential.

What is TRiO?

The Federal TRiO Programs are programs providing educational opportunity for eligible participants. Congress established a series of programs to help facilitate college entry and graduation for low-income citizens to more fully participate in the economy of the United Sates. The name TRiO was derived from the fact that initially there were just three programs: Talent Search, Upward Bound, and Student Support Services. TRiO programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965. TRiO programs help students overcome economic, educational, and social barriers to higher education. TRiO programs are structured to help motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Today TRiO includes six programs designed to serve low-income, first-generation college students, and students with disabilities to successfully matriculate through the academic pipeline starting with middle school to post baccalaureate programs.
