English Department

About

We are home to two general education courses that prepare you to communicate at the college level: ENGL 101 and 102, otherwise known as English I and English II. Together, ENGL 101 and 102 teach you how to write a compelling narrative, argue your position more effectively, analyze literature, and powerfully write that research paper that will be required in many college classes. Our popular upper-level and elective courses allow you to explore a rich range of topics, including ENGL 120: Creative Writing, ENGL 210: Themes and Issues in Literature, ENGL 212: American Indian Literature, ENGL 218: Comics and the Graphic Novel, and ENGL 230: Gender, Sexuality and Literature.

Mission Statement

The mission of the English department is to provide higher education to federally recognized tribal members.  The English department accomplishes this mission through provision of a curriculum that is culturally sensitive, innovative, and academically excellent.

Haskell Writing Center

The Smokey McKinney Writing Center located in Ross Hall 122 offers a quiet place to study and or get help with writing assignments.  The writing center is named after past English instructor Dr. Smokey McKinney (Potawatomi) who felt a place was needed to support student writers.  We have both student tutors and a professional tutor.  The center is opened Monday-Friday 8-5.
